OpenAI launches an Admin plugin that makes workspace changes from chat

OpenAI released the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex on August 25, giving workspace administrators a way to read usage data and change settings inside one conversation. The company says an admin can ask a question, explore the details, make an authorized change, and confirm the result without switching between tools.

The mechanism matters more than the chat window. Behind each request, OpenAI says the plugin maps the admin’s instructions to a supported read or write action and returns a structured result. It exposes Admin Console capabilities to ChatGPT Work and Codex as permission-aware tools, and it runs inside each user’s existing role. It doesn’t grant broader access.

That’s the day job, and the plugin also automates recurring checks so that they don’t need custom engineering. OpenAI’s own example is routing pending usage requests into Slack or Microsoft Teams, so reviewers can approve or deny them where they already work. It can monitor feature-access requests too, granting access automatically when a request meets predefined criteria and sending exceptions for review.

The value is far beyond faster reporting. The Admin plugin connects the question to the next supported action, whether that is checking someone’s effective permissions, updating a group, changing a usage limit, or reviewing a spending request.

Malik’s team is also the reference customer, so the numbers that follow are worth reading slowly. OpenAI says a ChatGPT Work agent in Slack triages employee IT requests, and that deployed workflows resolved about 45% of ticket volume at the time of reporting. Support volume roughly doubled, by the company’s account. Those are OpenAI’s figures about OpenAI, with no outside audit attached.

In a demo write-up, 9to5Mac reported that OpenAI’s Aarti Bagul asked how adoption and credit usage had shifted across teams over 30 days, approved usage requests over the course of the demo, then had ChatGPT build a deck and post it to Slack. 9to5Mac says the plugin is available now from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work.

That directory is itself recent, because OpenAI rebuilt it this summer. As Latent Space reported, the App Directory became the Plugin Directory at the July 9 launch of ChatGPT Work, and Work plus Codex had reportedly crossed 10 million users three weeks later. The sceptical reading is about permissions, not capability. Writing for ZDNet, David Gewirtz said Work hasn’t been asking for permissions as often as he’d like. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI discourages persistent approval on the Messages plugin, because it “removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you”. So an admin console reachable by prompt raises that same question, but at higher stakes.

OpenAI’s answer is a receipt rather than a gate. For each change, the company says admins can see what they asked for, whether the action completed, and what changed, and that actions with broader impact can be reviewed before they apply. The announcement names no price and no tier requirement, only an install path: enable it in workspace settings, then add it from the Plugins directory on web or desktop.

Gewirtz notes that ChatGPT Work reaches even free accounts, though agentic runs burn capacity quickly and he does most of his on the $20 per month Plus tier. Whether admin powers follow that same tiering is the thing to watch, and we’ve reported that OpenAI’s enterprise revenue has passed its consumer revenue.
